Please keep in mind that this is a sequel and may contain spoilers for Book 1 - which I reviewed here!
It is no secret that I am a mega fan of every single thing Anna James writes. So you cannot imagine my excitement when the wonderful HarperCollins team sent me an early copy of book two in the Chronicles of Whetherwhy series!

Last year, I absolutely loved discovering the world of Whetherwhy in book one, The Age of Enchantment, and I couldn't wait to see what happens next to Juniper and Rafferty. Well, let me tell you, book two did NOT disappoint! With new characters, unfurling secrets and danger at every corner, I raced through The Season of Flames, cover to cover.
In this fantastical new tale, we start back in the centre of the magical world of Whetherwhy, where everyone possesses a form of magic aligned with one of the seasons (apart from Enchanters, who wield powers from all four seasons). Elio, who only knows life at the circus, does not yet know which seasonal power he holds. He has spent his entire life travelling with his father, working for the magical circus under the watchful ringleader, Stella. Elio hasn't much questioned his life at the circus or his mother's absence, but he enjoys working with the Tangles and travelling with his best friend, Lida.
But when a runaway seeks help from Elio and Lida, mysterious men appear on his father's doorstep - and things look like they'll never be the same again. Elio is forced into hiding and runs away from the circus, with his new friend Pom, to protect his most prized possession that the Queen of Whetherwhy is so desperate to find. Will Elio ever reunite with his father and Lida? Will the Queen truly stop at nothing to catch him? And what secrets will he uncover on the way?
Full of twists and turns, dragons and spells, this book will have you clutching onto the very last page. Elio is persistent and empathetic - he values his friends and will do anything to save his father. But he finds some surprises along the way... unveiled mysteries and, for the reader, some familiar faces. Anna James has once again written a spellbinding tale which is perfect for fans of Hedgewitch, Dragon Mountain and Impossible Creatures. Complete with enchanting illustrations by David Wyatt, these Chronicles have the tone of a classic tale whilst being modern and enthralling for the readers of today. The perfect combination, in my opinion. And Anna, if you're reading, I am utterly on the edge of my seat for book three!!
