I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree: A nature poem for every day of the year - selected by Fiona Waters

2018 is proving to be an excellent year for poetry aimed at children and young people. Newly published I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree continues this welcome trend and is the most beautiful poetry anthology I have seen for some time.

The selection is extensive, intelligent and generous. It's full of engaging poems, some of which are familiar and many that I enjoyed encountering for the first time. Haikus nestle happily in the company of riddles, shape poems and poetry in translation. The ebb and flow of the seasons is brought wonderfully to life by Fiona Waters' eclectic choices and Frann Preston Gannon's enchanting illustrations. You might first turn to your birthday poem, but will soon find yourself drifting contentedly from poem to poem, surprised and delighted at every turn of the page.

It is so heartening to see a publisher - the excellent Nosy Crow - putting such faith and energy into poetry. A collection like this is an investment which will last a lifetime. It's a wonderful present both for children and for adults. Every school and every family should have one. Definitely the book which has made me happiest this year. Buy it and ignite the poetry fire in a new generation of children.
